UPDATE: Facebook said it has "dramatically limited the damage" of the spam that flooded the site with images of graphic sex and violence.
"Users were tricked into pasting and executing malicious JavaScript in their browser URL bar causing them to unknowingly share this offensive content," the social networking giant said.
"Our team responded quickly and we have eliminated most of the spam caused by this attack. We are now working to improve our systems to better defend against similar attacks in the future."
Facebook has also identified the hackers and is pursuing legal action against them.
It said no user data or accounts were compromised during the attack.
While Facebook is no stranger to spam attacks—which is said to occur almost every day—the latest is the most disturbing. Graphic photos that appeared on the site included gore, animal cruelty and altered images of celebrities like Justin Bieber having sex.
